The Day My Body Started Moving on Its Own: My Journey with Kundalini
There are some moments in life that change everything - moments that defy logic, yet feel more real than anything you’ve ever known.
For me, one of those moments came during meditation, not long after my Reiki attunement (that’s just the word they use for being trained in and ‘switched on’ to the Reiki energy so you can share it with others).
I wasn’t trying to make anything happen.
I was simply sitting, breathing, when suddenly my body began to move.
My arms lifted and spiralled as though guided by an unseen current.
My spine began to pulse.
I felt a deep, rhythmic contraction at each chakra - one by one, rising up through the body.
It was powerful. Intense.
And yet I didn’t feel afraid.
I felt alive.
Like I’d been plugged directly into the mains of the universe.
That was my first experience of Kundalini energy - though I didn’t yet have the words to describe it.
All I knew was that something ancient had awoken within me.
My First Kundalini Training: The Disillusionment
That experience lit a fire of curiosity, so I did what many seekers do - I enrolled in a Kundalini Yoga teacher training to understand what had happened and to deepen my knowledge and understanding.
But the deeper I went, the more uncomfortable I felt.
Classes began before dawn.
We were instructed to wear white, cover our heads, and follow a strict daily Sadhana at 5am.
The energy in the space felt… rigid. Masculine.
There was little room for intuition or individuality - for listening to the body.
And when I started asking questions -
Why were we memorising Sikh texts without context?
Why were we still practising from manuals written by Yogi Bhajan, a teacher later exposed for serious misconduct? -
the facilitators would not meet me with answers that went anywhere deep enough.
Something in me knew this wasn’t the whole truth of Kundalini.
This sacred energy could not belong to one man, one culture, or one doctrine.
So, I walked away — heartbroken and confused.
The Call Back
For a while, I avoided Kundalini altogether.
I even heard people call it “dangerous” or “evil,” which only deepened the confusion.
But the dreams began again. I’ve had recurring dreams about snakes since I was a little girl.
Been handed serpents in my meditations and Shamanic journeys.
Something deep inside was unlocking again and calling me back.
I realised that Kundalini itself - the raw, creative life force - had never left me.
I just needed to meet her on my own terms.
A Return to the Feminine
Eventually, I discovered Brett Larkin’s teachings and her Kundalini teacher training with the support of Guru Singh, and something in me clicked.
This approach to Kundalini felt different - fluid, embodied, inclusive. Evolving rather than dogmatic.
It honoured the feminine as much as the masculine.
It’s not just about transcending
It welcomed curiosity instead of shutting it down.
And for the first time, I felt at home within this practice again.
Now, as I train within this awakened lineage, I feel that same aliveness I experienced in that first meditation - but grounded, integrated, and aligned with my truth.

What is the kundalini serpent?
What is a kundalini awakening?
What is the origin of kundalini?
How are mantra and mudra used in the practice, and why?
